Company
Located in Lynchburg, Tennessee and owned by Brown-Forman, Jack Daniel’s is one of the most well-known names and highest-selling brands in whiskey. They’re most known for creating sour mash Tennessee whiskey—which is like bourbon but the distillate goes through an extra step called the Lincoln County Process (charcoal filtering).
Production
This is the 3rd batch of the Jack Daniel’s 10 year expression, which is the first 10 year whiskey from the brand in over 100 years. This expression has historically seen one release per year since it’s inception.
Jack Daniel’s 10 Year Batch 3 Review
Nose – 4/5
Deeper caramel apple notes on top of an underlying oak, leather, and vanilla.
This has a bit more apple and leather than Batch 2. That batch was much more heavy on an interesting banana note with a bit of brown sugar. Definitely a nice difference between the batches (with the standard JD notes being there still…caramel, oak, and vanilla).
I will say, I think the nose is slightly worse than the last one, but it’s still well above average.
Palate – 3.5/5
Very oak forward with some notes of vanilla and caramel. Much less fruity than the nose suggested (I didn’t really get any apple notes). The heaviness of the oak took me off guard because it wasn’t that intense on the nose.
It’s a bit one-dimensional because of that but it’s still very rich.
Batch 2 had much more fruit notes and dryness. Again, I think this just slightly is worse than that batch, but it’s still a great sip.
Finish – 3.5/5
Oak carries through heavily to the finish, as does the leather. There’s also an undertone of caramel, giving it just a slight sweetness. It then fades into more vanilla as a nice final surprise.
It’s still medium-lengthed but far less hot than Batch 2 was. There aren’t any notes of red hots or banana here.
Value – 2.75/5
The MSRP here went up by about $15 to $85. Because of that, along with the sip being a bit more one-dimensional than Batch 2, I don’t think it’s worth going out of your way to get a bottle.
If you stumble across one at MSRP, it may be worth trying once. But I would pass on it and save my money for Jack Daniel’s 12 Year (either batch) all day long.
