Who They Are
Legend has it that Thomas Jefferson gave Delaware the nickname “The Diamond State” because of its value in the strategic location on the Eastern Seaboard. But Delaware holds a more important and unique place in American history as the first state to ratify the Constitution, earning its moniker “The First State.”
Both nicknames are a fitting backdrop for Painted Stave Distillery, a craft distillery that is carving out its own firsts in Delaware’s small bourbon culture. Operating in a state better known for its beaches and chemical manufacturing than whiskey production, Painted Stave stands as an anomaly—a pioneer in Delaware’s burgeoning craft spirits scene.
To further define their approach, Painted Stave has coined the term “Delaware Style” to describe their bourbon. But what exactly does that mean? While not an officially recognized designation, Delaware Style is Painted Stave’s way of celebrating their high-rye mashbill, a choice that sets their bourbon apart from many corn-heavy expressions.
Let’s explore how Painted Stave’s Delaware Style Bourbon delivers……
Painted Stave Bourbon Review: Tasting Notes
Nose – 4/5
The Nose is lively and vibrant, with a spicy rye-forward character leading the way. Notes of cinnamon, cracked black pepper, and toasted oak jump out immediately, followed by a wonderful layer of sweetness. Subtle hints of citrus peel and baking spices round out a Nose profile that feels both familiar to a bourbon love and yet refreshingly unique.
Palate – 4/5
There are more than a few surprises on the Palate, and like many toasted expressions, it’s all about the layers. First, the allure of the sweet treat from the Nose was just that…an allure. The first sip brings a flood of unexpected yet delicious white pepper spice that lingers longer than you might expect—likely amplified by the viscous mouthfeel. Once the spice settles, the Palate is blessed with a delightful tartness—think tart apple pie.
Finish – 3/5
The Finish is moderately short, leaving fleeting notes of warm oak and rye spice that dissolves into a subtle and sweet nuttiness that ties back to the Palate. While the Finish less dry than I had expected, it is highly satisfying.
Value – 4/5
