Atticus Jones Colorado Straight Rye Whiskey Review: Tasting Notes
Nose – 4.5/5
The Nose is wonderfully fresh, with peppery spice leading the way, followed by softer notes of sweet apples and orange peel. As it opens up, surprisingly mocha notes emerge, adding depth. There’s an impressive complexity to the Nose that is intriguing.
Palate – 4.25/5
On the Palate, I find a ginger influence with that very nice and complex combination of spicy, warmth, slightly sweet and a zing of some citrus. As the spice recedes, flavors of spiced baked apples, and toasted nuts come forward, making for some additional sweetness and toned warmth. The mouthfeel is oily setting up a nice Finish.
Finish – 4/5
The oily mouthfeel carries into a long Finish, featuring charred oak, baking spices, and the mocha chocolate hinted at on the Nose. A slightly dry conclusion calls out for another sip.
Value – 3.75/5
At an MSRP of $60, Atticus Jones offers a premium rye experience. By controlling the full of Its in-house production and use of a double pot distillation contributes to a refined expression. For seasoned rye enthusiasts, it’s a bottle you will likely revisit often. For newcomers, it’s an excellent gateway rye.
However, the value score takes a hit considering the steep shipping costs and added Service Charge if ordered online from The Family Jones. The combined expense can increase the price by 20% above the MSRP. While this doesn’t detract from the whiskey’s craftsmanship, it’s a factor to weigh before purchase.
