Buzzard’s Roost Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon: Where Two Traditions Meet
Buzzard’s Roost is a brand that is fast gaining momentum in the bourbon world due to their approach to aging and finishing. By carefully sourcing bourbon and finishing in proprietary barrels to achieve unique flavor profiles, Buzzard’s Roost is garnering significant attention. The brand prides itself on using specially treated and toasted barrels to create nuanced and balanced expressions.
One of the key aspects that sets Buzzard’s Roost apart is their use of proprietary barrels. The distillery works closely with cooperages to create custom barrels that enhance the flavor profile of their whiskeys. These barrels are toasted and charred to specific levels, allowing for greater control over the aging process and the final product’s taste profile
Buzzard’s Roost Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon Review: Tasting Notes
Full disclosure: while my bourbon experience runs deep, my Irish whiskey exploration is in development. So, I’m approaching this expression primarily through a bourbon lens.
Nose – 4.5/5
The Nose of Buzzard’s Roost Bottled in Bond Bourbon is inviting with notes of caramel, vanilla and rich oak. There is also a subtle fruity undertone. Toasted nuts, particularly almonds and pecans, contribute to a nutty richness. A touch of spice, including cinnamon and nutmeg, rounds out the Nose, adding a warm and inviting element.
Palate – 2/5
I found the Palate, with a high wheat mash bill, to be very surprising. Flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg emerge and bring forth a warm and spicy element. Coupled with the 100 proof, the bourbon overpowers and any sweet of the wheat that might have been present which is disappointing.
Finish – 3/5
As the Finish gradually fades, lingering notes of oak and spice remain. A warm and comforting aftertaste lingers long. Overall, the Finish is rich and complex bourbon, leaving you with a sense of satisfaction and a desire for more.
Value – 2.75/5
With a $72 price point, Buzzard’s Roost Bottled in Bond Bourbon is priced at a premium. The Bottled in Bond designation signifies a high standard of production and aging that often results in an expression that is rich, complex, and full of character.
Buzzard’s Roost Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon Review: The Verdict
Enjoyed neat, I find this bourbon to be a disappointing wheated expression. Enjoyed with one rock, the wheat shows up and it is a much better expression. It is the one rock that saves this bourbon and put it in the upper Silver category.
Verdict – 3.75/5
We score each bourbon based on nose, palate, finish, and value.
