Company
Long Island Spirits is in Baiting Hollow, NY, about three-quarters of a mile from the coastline of Long Island Sound. Obviously, not your prototypical longitude and latitude for bourbon production. Interestingly, Long Island Spirits claims they were the 100th distillery in the United States when they opened in 2007.
Production
Long Island Spirits does not specifically show the wheated expression on their website. But, other information indicates their whiskies are pot stilled. Their Rickhouse is located at the distillery.
With a summer average high of 82 degrees peaking in July and an average winter low of 23 degrees in January, the climate varies greatly from what we typically consider to be “bourbon country”. With that kind of temperature swings, we can assume the aging process occurs much more quickly.
Field & Sound Bottled in Bond Straight Wheated Bourbon Review: Tasting Notes
Nose 4/5
The nose is quite lovely. The “sweet of the wheat” shines through with hints of banana and butter cake.
Palate 3.5/5
This very light amber bourbon is warm on the tongue. The sweetness of the wheat offsets some of the 100-proof and makes for a nice pour…sort of like a warm cinnamon bun.
Finish 3.5/5
The finish lingers but doesn’t wear out its welcome, just enough to give you a good hug. There’s no oily mouthfeel which reflects what Long Island Spirits says is their attentiveness to maintaining a close watch on pulling out most of the heads and tails leaving only hearts.
Value 4/5
This is a bottle that I picked up as a “flyer.” I wasn’t expecting much because I thumbed my nose a bit at the location of the distillery and Rickhouse. But, I was wrong, big-time wrong. This is not a flyer. If you’re a wheated fan then this one is a pick up for sure.
