Frey Ranch’s Bold Core Expression
Frey Ranch Farm Strength Uncut Bourbon represents the bolder cousin of their Straight Bourbon. Built from the same four-grain mash bill and grown on the same historic Nevada farmland as the flagship 90-proof bourbon, this expression is bottled exactly as the Frey team tastes it before proofing down.
The Frey family farm was established in 1854, ten years before Nevada became a state, and is recognized as the first deeded farm property in Nevada. Of the ranch’s nearly 2,500 acres, 650 acres form the dedicated “whiskey farm,” where all grains for the distillery are grown with purpose and consistency. The family motto, “Be Good to the Land and the Land Will Be Good to You”, reflects the estate-driven production philosophy embedded in everyone of their steps from farming to distillation to bottling.
Frey Ranch malts its own barley in a custom-built malt house, double distills this bourbon, and ages it for 5 years before bottling at full proof.
Frey Ranch Farm Strength Uncut Bourbon Review: Tasting Notes

Nose – 4.5/5
Caramel. Banana bread. Brown sugar. Light oak.
Strengths: The higher proof intensifies nearly every element of the Nose. The ripe banana note from the flagship bourbon evolves into warm banana bread. Caramel deepens and leans toward brown sugar. A bit of oak appears.
Why it’s not higher: A brief ethanol flash on the first pass is the only real limitation. One more layer of contrast would push complexity even further.
Rating justification: A richly textured, expressive Nose that clearly benefits from cask strength.
Palate – 4.7/5
Butterscotch. Caramel. Honeycomb. Cinnamon. Warm oak.
Strengths: Dramatically layered. Rich butterscotch and honey notes. Cinnamon spice shows up in a big way. Chewy.
Why it’s not higher: Sweetness leads. A touch more tannin or darker notes could provide added counterbalance.
Rating justification: A standout Palate with exceptional depth for a 5-year bourbon. Flavor density that is not commonplace at this price and proof.
Finish – 4.3/5
Baking spice. Dry oak. Pepper. Warm grain.
Strengths: The Finish is significantly longer than the flagship bourbon. Baking spice and pepper slowly unfold.
Why it’s not higher: A drying sensation appears on the very back of the tongue. It’s integrated but unexpected and feels slightly disjointed.
Rating justification: A long, spice-driven, well-structured Finish.
Value – 4.6/5
At $79 along with the combination of seed-to-bottle transparency, on-site malting, 5-year age, and robust flavor density is a rarity. Many comparable cask-strength bourbons from both craft and legacy distillers sit easily at $20–$50 higher…..and they don’t match this level of distinctness. A top-tier value for any enthusiast seeking true farm-to-glass bourbon at full proof.
