Who They Are
Green River Distilling Co. is a big player in bourbon history. Originally established in 1885 and known for its slogan, “The Whiskey Without Regrets,” Green River gained a reputation for producing high-quality whiskey. Their whiskey was even awarded the gold medal at the Paris Exposition in 1900.
Like most distilleries of that era, Green River was hit hard by Prohibition and eventually was shuttered. The brand laid dormant until 2016, when the distillery was brought back to life. Returning to store shelves in 2022, with a label declaring it as “The Pride of Owensboro,” Green River Distilling Co. stands as one symbol of Kentucky’s whiskey legacy.
Among its offerings is Green River Straight Rye Whiskey, an expression bottled at 90 proof and crafted with a 95% rye; 5% malted barley mashbill. Let’s explore if this whiskey delivers the goods.
Green River Straight Rye Whiskey Review: Tasting Notes
Nose – 4.25/5
The Nose opens with notes of ripe red apples notes that, for me, land first but are quickly followed by mild savory notes of freshly cracked black pepper. Underlying aromas of fresh orange and sweet oak add more touches of sweetness.
Palate – 4.25/5
On the Palate, mild spice takes center stage with notes of cinnamon and white pepper. Mingling with those spicey notes is a sweetness of brown sugar and honey. Mid-Palate, a delightful hint of fruit—ripe apples and pears—emerges. The mouthfeel is balanced yet lively, making it an enjoyable neat sipper.
Finish – 3/5
The Finish is medium with lingering notes of baking spice, charred oak, and a slight nuttiness along with a bit of citrus zest. While not overly complex, the Finish nicely ties together the Nose and Palate for a well formed expression.
Value – 4.5/5
Priced at $35, Green River Straight Rye Whiskey offers exceptional value. It’s a versatile rye that does well as a sipper. During a recent bar visit, I inquired to the bartender about Green River Rye holding up in a cocktail. She was adamant that it would perform well.
Green River Straight Rye Whiskey: The Verdict
Green River Straight Rye Whiskey seems like a solid whiskey in the rye category. With its balance of spice and sweetness along with relatively low price point, it’s a great bottle for those exploring a gateway rye whiskey or a consistent go-to for their sipping selection.
