Company
Located in Lynchburg, Tennessee and owned by Brown-Forman, Jack Daniel’s is one of the most well-known names and highest-selling brands in whiskey. They’re most known for creating sour mash Tennessee whiskey—which is like bourbon but the distillate goes through an extra step called the Lincoln County Process (charcoal filtering).
Production
This is the second malt whiskey Jack Daniel’s has released. The first, American Single Malt, was a limited release in 2022. This whiskey was put through the traditional charcoal mellowing process before being entered into barrels where they were aged for ~5 years. Finally, they were finished in 300L Orloso Sherry casks.
Jack Daniel’s Single Malt Oloroso Sherry Cask Review
Nose – 2.5/5
This comes across a lot like a brandy. It’s fruit-forward with heavy cherry (more specifically, Cheerwine) notes with grape and strawberry. Underneath all of that fruitiness, there’s a nutty undertone with the classic caramel, oak, and vanilla you expect from a whiskey.
This isn’t my cup of tea and almost had some cough syrup notes.
Palate – 2.5/5
You can immediately tase the sherry influence and the cherry comes through heavily at the front of the sip. It actually has a nice bit of spice and character which was unexpected. This all faded into a combination of oak, vanilla, and dark chocolate with a nutty undertone. A ton of the flavors from the nose came out again.
Again, I’m not a fan of the fruit and nuttiness here. It’s a bizarre combination.
Finish – 2.75/5
The cherry carries all the way through the sip and fades into oak, pepper, and lingering sherry sweetness. It’s a short and warm finish. While I still wasn’t incredibly satisfied, this was the best part of the sip.
Value – 1/5
At $100, I can’t recommend getting a bottle of this whiskey unless you’re a HUGE single malt and sherry fan.
