Company
Located in Lynchburg, Tennessee and owned by Brown-Forman, Jack Daniel’s is one of the most well-known names and highest-selling brands in whiskey. They’re most known for creating sour mash Tennessee whiskey—which is like bourbon but the distillate goes through an extra step called the Lincoln County Process (charcoal filtering).
Production
This is the standard Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 that’s simply finished in Añejo tequila barrels. This experimental whiskey was first aged at Jack Daniel’s, then matured in Mexico before returning to Lynchburg.
Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series No. 11 Review: Tasting Notes
Nose – 3.5/5
The agave is immediately noticeable. It’s not necessarily overpowering, but surprising. It smells like the Corazon Añejo tequila that was aged in a Blanton’s barrel but flipped where there is more bourbon than tequila (which isn’t surprising).
After the immediate agave notes, there is a ton of oak, caramel, and pepper. The ethanol is surprisingly present as well for it only being 90 proof.
Palate – 4/5
If you’ve had a good Añejo tequila you’ll immediately taste it. It’s like Añejo with more caramel and vanilla. There are also notes of baking spice and citrus with much less oak than the nose seemed to suggest.
Finish – 3.5/5
Spicer than expected with notes of rye, black pepper, vanilla, citrus, and slight agave. The standard bourbon profile with agave and slight citrus is consistent throughout the entire sip. It’s interesting and more complex than expected.
Value – 2.5/5
At $41.99 per 350ml bottle, I think this is a bit overpriced.
It’s great, don’t get me wrong, but I think it’s a premium price that the bourbon doesn’t necessarily warrant. I would expect the same price for a 750ml bottle.
Although I’m not a huge fan of the price, this is a really good bourbon. If you like Añejo tequila, you’ll like this. It’s the perfect marriage between the two, which I was skeptical could even happen. Honestly, it’s really impressive.
