Blending Past, Present, and Future in a Single Pour
Old Elk Distillery has built a reputation for pushing the boundaries of blending, and the Infinity Blend series is a prime example. Launched in 2021, the annual releases stand as testament to craftsmanship, with each year’s blend building upon the last to create a whiskey that bridges flavors from year-to-year.
The 2024 Infinity Blend, an expression under their Master’s Blend Series, follows this tradition, carefully layering four distinct Old Elk whiskey components:
- 61% Old Elk Wheated Bourbon – The foundation of the blend, bringing a rich sweetness and a smooth, full-bodied mouthfeel.
- 15% 2023 Old Elk Infinity Blend – Aged depth carried over from the prior year’s release, adding complexity and continuity.
- 12% Old Elk Straight Rye Whiskey – Introduces spice and structure, balancing the wheat-forward softness.
- 12% Old Elk Straight Wheat Whiskey – Enhances the blend’s creamy, rounded texture while imparting a delicate grain sweetness.
The Infinity Blend concept is a whiskey collector’s dream—each release is a snapshot of the past, present, and future of Old Elk’s blending expertise.
I had the opportunity to sample this year’s release at The Reserve, Old Elk’s tasting room in Fort Collins, CO. The question is: does this year’s blend uphold the series’ legacy? Let’s find out.
Old Elk Infinity Blend (2024 Release) Review: Tasting Notes
Nose – 4.5/5
This is a beautifully complex Nose, with deep, rich caramel, toasted vanilla, and honey-drizzled pastries making for a unique first impression. The higher wheat content lends asoft, buttery character, while the slight rye influence introduces baking spice, citrus zest, and toasted oak, adding depth.
Palate – 4/5
The mouthfeel isdense and luxurious, fully coating the Palate. Butterscotch, toffee, brown sugar, and grilled apples with a touch of cinnamon lead the way. Mid-palate, the rye spice and clove provide a pleasant contrast, creating an evolving interplay of sweetness and spice that makes each sip exciting.
Finish – 4/5
The Finish is long, warm, and rounded. Vanilla and caramel linger, while oak, dark chocolate, and a touch of black pepper fades in and out. The influence of wheat keeps the Finish soft, making this a well-rounded easy sipper despite its high proof.
Value – 3.5/5
Old Elk does not publish an MSRP, but this expression shows up in online retailer for around $250. At that price, it sits firmly in the premium bourbon category.
While the blend is very well done and the Infinity Blend concept is compelling, the price point can make it a hard sell for casual drinkers. For collectors and enthusiasts intrigued by Old Elk’s innovation, this bottle is an investment in the brand’s story—but for those simply seeking the best pour at this price point, there are stronger contenders in the $200+ range.
Old Elk Infinity Blend (2024 Release) Review: The Verdict
Wheated bourbon lovers will appreciate Old Elk Infinity Blend 2024 Release for its rich, creamy texture, while rye enthusiasts will enjoy the subtle spice woven throughout.
The Infinity Blend concept makes each bottle a unique part of Old Elk’s story, and this year’s edition is another strong entry in the series. However, at $250+, it’s best suited for dedicated Old Elk fans and collectors rather than casual drinkers.
