An Unexpected Location
Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co is a craft whiskey house and brewery under one roof. What’s not love?
Their October 2024 whiskey release, Town Branch Overproof, aims to intensity with structure into the glass—whether poured neat or used in a cocktail.
What makes this bottle unique is that it’s not just a single style of bourbon. It’s a blend of multiple Kentucky Straight Whiskeys, each contributing a distinct mashbill:
- Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey – 72% Corn, 15% Rye, 13% Malted Barley
- Kentucky Straight Wheated Bourbon Whiskey – 70% Corn, 22% Wheat, 8% Malted Barley
- Kentucky Straight Double Oak Whiskey – 72% Corn, 15% Rye, 13% Malted Barley
- Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey – 90% Rye, 5% Corn, 5% Malted Barley
That blend delivers sweetness from the corn, richness from the wheat, along with a significant oaky backbone from the double-oaked component, and a noticeable spice layer from the rye. Bottled at 104 proof Town Branch Overproof is made to hold its own in a cocktail glass while still offering an exceptional neat sipping experience.
Sold through various local retailers and many Online Retail Stores, Town Branch Overproof is a bottle that is readily available.
Town Branch Overproof Kentucky Straight Whiskey Review: Tasting Notes
Nose – 4.25/5
The Nose opens with molasses, toasted caramel, and significant notes of baking spice. There’s a touch of earthy or musky undertone that is endearing along a background layer of light cocoa powder.
Palate – 4.5/5
The Palate leads with brown sugar and oak before moving along into clove and cinnamon spice. The blend of different whiskey styles is definitely noticeable—there’s some sweetness that reminds of wheated bourbon, a wood tannin tang that is likely from the double oak component, and an ever so slight spice kick from the rye. It’s packed full of flavor that shines through and drinks slightly below its proof point.
Finish – 3.75/5
The Finish is medium to long, with lingering notes of toasted oak, vanilla, and some black pepper. It’s a clean exit that goes suddenly although there is enough of a presence to hold up to a single rock.
Value – 4.75/5
At $40, Town Branch Overproof delivers exceptional value. It’s rare to find a bottle in this price range that combines multiple whiskey styles and displays a significant flavor experience. The proof point is right in the sweet spot for a sipper or for use in a cocktail. This is an exceptional bottle to keep around for “journeyman” use—especially for those who prefer a bolder pour in their Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Whiskey Sour.
Town Branch Overproof Kentucky Straight Whiskey Review: The Verdict
Town Branch Overproof isn’t chasing the limited-edition or Secondary Finish market. Instead, it’s a whiskey built for everyday function—with enough flavor, proof, and variety to punch well above its price point. This is a reliable, high-proof workhorse.
Verdict – 4.3/5
