Company
Buffalo Trace (Sazerac Company) is arguably the most well-known distillery on the planet. Its lineup includes the likes of Pappy. E.H. Taylor, Blanton’s, Elmer T. Lee, W.L. Weller, and more.
The Weller line is named after William Laurie Weller, who was credited as being the first distiller to use wheat instead of rye as a secondary grain. He also actually hired Julian Van Winkle (Yep…”Pappy”) and his company (W.L. Weller & Sons) eventually merged with A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery to become Stitzel-Weller Distilling.
Production
Weller Antique 107 (often called “OWA” for Old Weller Antique) used to be released on an ongoing basis with other Weller expressions but is now highly allocated. It’s rumored to have the same mashbill as the Old Rip Van Winkle (Pappy) lineup.
Weller Antique 107 Review: Flavor Profile
Nose – 93/100
This smells like a spicy cinnamon roll with notes of oak, caramel, cinnamon, vanilla. There’s also quite a bit of dark fruit, adding additional complexity to the nose.
Palate – 93/100
The palate is very cinnamon spice and oak forward then moves to faint hints of vanilla and caramel. It’s full-bodied and the dark fruit from the nose comes through in the palate.
Finish – 91/100
The finish is long, spicy, and oaky. Again, cinnamon is prevalent and a touch of vanilla is present.
Value – 85/100
I think Weller Antique 107 is a great pour if you can get it for $50 or so. Once you go over $80, it has a harder time competing with other bottles in the pricepoint. A few years ago, you could find it for $80-$90 pretty regularly, but the price is now often jacked up past $110. Some stores even charge $150-$200.
It’s a good and interesting bourbon, sure, but not even close to worth that much. Back in the day, it’d collect dust on every liquor store’s shelf.
