Who They Are
Wyoming does come to the top of my mind as a whiskey-making region. Instead, Wyoming conjures images of grandeur, mountains rising out of flatlands and geysers spewing from sulfur-stained grounds. Bison roaming unfettered and moose traversing across roadways. Cowboys and big blue skies that stretch as far as you can see. I picture incredible sunsets, thousands of stars, campfires, and storytelling.
Wyoming Whiskey, the first legal distillery in Wyoming, sold its first bottle in 2012. They have been going strong ever since.
At an elevation nearing 4300’ and temperature swings from 5°F winter lows to 135°F summer highs, Kirby, Wyoming is far different from what we typically consider an ideal environment for aging whiskey. But those wide temperature swings can be an advantage as well by forcing the whiskey to interact deeper and more often with the wood.
The National Parks No. 4 expression pays tribute to Mammoth Hot Springs. Having been there several times, I can attest that it is one of the unique and possibly most visually striking natural features in Yellowstone National Park. With the release of No. 4, Wyoming Whiskey, and another expression (Old Faithful Bourbon) donated $150,000 to Yellowstone Forever, a nonprofit organization supporting the protection and preservation of Yellowstone National Park.

Wyoming Whiskey National Parks No. 4: Tasting Notes
Nose – 4.25/5
The Nose of No. 4 is a delightful and rich sweet and spicy blend. Initially, greeted by a rich caramel scent and followed quickly by crisp fresh notes of apples and a touch of cinnamon, your Nose may bring about visions of a warm caramel apple crisp.
Palate – 4.25/5
First sip is bit unexpected and sort of a smack you in the face presence of cinnamon and baking spices. But as bold as the first sip, the whiskey quickly retreats into highly satisfying and warm and long on the Palate. The length on the Palate provides an opportunity to fully enjoy and appreciate a creamy mouthfeel with notes of cocoa and some oakiness.
Finish – 3.5/5
As promised by the Palate, No. 4’s spice carries fully forward to the Finish. The cinnamon notes flood the back of the tongue and make it stand up and call for more. A bit of astringency remains after the Finish leaving a slight hint of sour aftertaste. But it is not off-putting at all and, in an odd way, increases the anticipation for another sip.
Value – 4/5
At $80 MSRP, Wyoming Whiskey National Parks No. 4 competes in the mid-to-upper shelf space. Given the high quality on the Nose and Palate coupled with their support of preservation of Yellowstone National Park, the value is excellent.
